The Enemy of Good

Writer's picture: Christine ClardyChristine Clardy

Who first said, "Perfection is the enemy of good"? Even getting a straight answer to this question demonstrates its truth. Was it Voltaire? An Italian fishwife? Does it have its roots in Aristotle's golden mean? Can the quote be linked this something my husband once said when we were running late: "If you never miss a plane, you're spending too much time in the airport"?

Wherever the saying came from, I am giving up on codifying its history in order to commandeer its concept: this blog post represents my official surrender to imperfection (yes, I get it...one of many to come...).

I wanted this post to include carefully curated wisdom from the Buddha, links to science-backed evidence for sound healing, cool modern intellectualism, and perfect grammar.

But it's posting as-is, along with the profound goodness of letting it serve as an invitation for you to join me and others on February 16 from 2-6pm for a Half-Day Afternoon Retreat, held locally at Sun and Moon Yoga Studio in Fairfax, Virginia. The retreat is called Resting with Sound and Silence and features an opportunity for periods of intentional silence interspersed with gentle guided movement (led by my colleague Marjorie Ames) and sound healing (featuring my own live gong, chimes, and crystal bowl tones). The retreat is designed for everyone, whether you are meditation-curious or have an established practice.

Is it a trip to the Bahamas? Nope. Does it include massage and an updated pedicure? Nope. But perhaps it will remind you of the most important and most overlooked aspect of self-care: it originates with our own, gorgeously imperfect, selves.

So, bring a journal, snacks and your favorite sweater. Or don't bring anything extra at all. We'll share our snacks, yoga mats, blankets, eye pillows, and even a few art supplies in order to allow this time to be just what it is: a surrendering of yourself to goodness.

What perfection do we need?
